Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance(Cd/DVD) [Sony Music Entertainment ý - 2012]“Screaming for Vengeance” is one of those rare metal albums that managers to mix head banging ‘n’ fist punchy memorable song craft with huge commercial success; with out selling out it’s metal roots. Thirty years after it’s original release the album’s still sounds as punchy, exciting & damn memorable as it did when it was first released. It’s the album that broke the band huge in the sates, it’s also one of Priest's most wholly conist records, and a true 1980’s metal classic. This 30th Anniversary special edition offers up a two disc CD/ DVD set that brings together the original album, a collection of five bonus tracks, & a DVD featuring a full US stadium show from 1983. The original album offers up ten classic slices of 1980’s metal that bind together chugging ‘n’ driving riff craft, twin guitar soloing, and of course the classic powerful & soaring versatile vocals of Rob Halford. The tracks are kept short ‘n’ sharp, with a running length of between three minutes to just over five minutes, with the whole album coming in just under the thirty nine minute mark. The album has been giving a new remix here which nicely seems to make Halford’s vocals more powerful, with the guitar & drums having more punch & detail to them too.
The Six extra tracks bring together five live recordings of the following album tracks: Electric Eye”, “Riding the Wind”, “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’”, “Screaming for Vengeance”, and “Devil’s Child”. These tracks were recording at the end of 1982, and they show the band in a great revved up mood. The other track here is an unreleased studio track in the shape of “Prisoners of Your Eyes”- it’s an example of semi metal ballad with a mixture of 1980’s swirling ‘n’ synthetic synth & pare back riff craft. Apparently the tracks from 1985 from the bands Turbo era, it’s ok for what it is, but it doesn’t really fit in with the punchy & memorable metal craft of the rest of the original album. The DVD features a 12 track live concert from 1983. It sees the band playing at US Festival in San Bernardino, California in front of 300,000 plus metal fans. All the band are on fine metal form, with Halford been the perfect front man as his vocals soar & rage with breaks to let the huge crowd singing along to these classic metal songs. The only other extra here is a ten page inlay booklet that features pictures of the bands DVD performance, along with a two page write-up about the album from US rock journalist Eddie Trunk. The write-up is very much from a fans point of few, and while it’s nice to read this kind of passionate praise for the album, there’s no real background or insight to the writing or recording process of the album which is a great pity.
On the whole this is acceptable enough reissue of this classic priest album, it’s just a pity the liner notes/booklet couldn’t have been a bit more weighty & informative. Roger Batty
