Death Frees Every Soul - What Knowledge Have The Dead [Parkbench Records/Smell The Stench - 2012]“What Knowledge Have The Dead?” is a 3inch cdr that offers up a slice a active walled noise/ wallish harsh noise. Death Frees Every Soul is a relatively new project from Scotland, and so far they have released a couple of split releases along with some D/L net releases. This CDR comes in a zip lock baggie, and it’s black & white cover features a series of geometric shapes over the picture of a 1920’s looking women- I’m guess this release is based around ghosts & such forth from the releases title & the cover artwork. The single track on offer here is built around this repetative & taut juddering/ mic rubbing tone. To start with this main tone is played over by a series of crisp jittering static tones, and this is quite effective & enclosing in it’s feeling. But sadly as the minutes tick by these static tones keep shifting & moving their textured, and in time they shift to more almost glitch bound stops ‘n’ starts- and at this point I start to really lose interest in the track. It just feels like DFES didn’t have the patience to lock down into a consistent & set ‘wall’, and he has to keep on fiddling with the tones. Sadly this fiddling gets worse as the track goes on, and the static textures start to get these rather annoying/ cute electro phaser like jitters in their textural trail, and these just really ruin any bit of atmosphere/ tension in the track
For me this track/ release was a real missed opportunity- it started off very taut & tense, but all the gradual fiddling with the static tone just really started to get on my nerves. I'll certainly give future DFES work a try as there was certainly some promise here, but I don’t think I’ll be returning to this release again. Roger Batty
