Kuusumun Profeetta - Huutoja Hiljaisesta Huoneesta [Ektro Records - 2012]“Huutoja Hiljaisesta Huoneesta”(Screams from a Silent Room) offers up a selection of rather mellow, atmospheric, and often memorable slices of song craft that mixes together elements of 1970’s classic rock, moody retro pop rock, low- key 80’s tinged euro pop, pared down mellow prog rock tendencies, euro folk rock, and a few sprinkle ‘n’ shakes of other genres too. Kuusumun Profeetta(Moon Fog Prophet) are a six piece project from Pori Finland, and the bands lead singer/ keyboard player is Mika Rättö, who is also the keyboardist/ vocalist/ percussionist in infamous Finish locked rock groove and genre mixing project Circle. Kuusumun Profeetta started in 2001, and this is their sixth full length release. Kuusumun Profeetta really have little in common with much of Rättö’s other main project, save from the odd mixing of genres & a few quirky edges. “Huutoja Hiljaisesta Huoneesta” is a very traditional song based affair with set verse/chours type settings, there is none of the looped & expanding Circle structure here. But what there is instead is a collection of nine songs that are rich with melody, atmosphere, and good old honest song-writing skill. The whole album feels like it’s from another time with a very laid back yet quite theatrical 1970’s/ early 1980’s vibe to it. With Rättö’s distinctive Finish vocals soaring & swooning over a mixture of retro set keyboards, Hammond organs, mellow rock instrumentation, subtle retro euro pop touches and even some accordion playing on the last track.
I can’t really recall enjoying a more traditional song based release like this for a very long, long time. But “Huutoja Hiljaisesta Huoneesta” really got me hook, line & sinker…..so if you enjoy well written, memorable, slightly quickly & theatrical retro based pop rock/ classic rock mixers this is a must have item!.
