Lovebrrd / Su Sous Toulouse En Rouge - Split [Lava Church Records ý - 2012]What I'm holding in my hands is a c20 split tape between Lovebrrd and Su Sous Toulouse En Rouge, two noise projects from Florida, U.S.A. I'm not really familiar with. The design is hipster-ish (i see a few triangles here and there), colorful and I must say pretty well made. I especially like the kind of jewel case they used, which I've seen used before in many Filth & Violence releases. Lovebrrd's side starts with excerpts from various phone calls that slowly overlap with mellow ambient noise. The track quickly escalates to full blown noise, with a constant crackling and swooshing mass of muddy sound surmounted by psychedelic synth escapades. I also hear some low frequency pounding loop and at least another layer of white noise coming and going. It's nothing that will become a classic of the genre, but it's a nice and well built noise track. Su Sous Toulouse En Rouge, in addition to having one of the longest monickers ever, choose a more aggressive/weird path. They start with a sample from some movie, announcing that this will be "a bumpy ride", and they abruptly cut off to high density rumbling static noise. Noise lasts just a bunch of seconds, and the track switches to what sounds like field recordings of some swamp or pond. The rest of the track swindles between completely retarded pop tunes and bizarre noise, with a few moments where the two styles happily co-exist. It's funny and enjoyable, but I'm sure that it's not everybody's cup of tea.
In conclusion this is an ok split. On one side you get a quite fine noise track, and on the other you get complete sonic retardation. It's not a bad deal. If you're interested in American "happy" (meaning there's no death, no perverse sex, no macho electronics here) noise I'd say go for it. If you're looking for anything else, just avoid it. The tape is available also on bandcamp, so you can listen to the tracks for free and decide for yourself. Nicola Vinciguerra
