Muse - Origin Of Symmetry [PIAS - 2001]So, let's try to distance ourselves from the 'R' band in this review. You know, the band who recently released the album with a bad memory. Muse has been compared to them lot's of times, especially with their debut album Showbiz. With Origin Of Symmetry they found their own style and after listening to this album I can hardly say they sound like Ra.. uhm oops...With Origin Of Symmetry Muse release their second album. It's packed with 11 songs and a cool multimedia section where you can join the online Muse TV club and view their videoclips. A good service to the fans who don't have access to MTV or other clipchannels. The album's first track is the really strong single 'New Born'. The song starts with a haunting piano part with Matthew Bellamy's vocals on top of it. If you heard Muse before then you know Matthew has impressive vocals. His voice is really powerfull and his range is from low to almost siren-like. If you hear him the first time you need to get used to it, but after a couple of tracks you will find yourself singing a long with it. I must say I'm impressed by his abilities.Second track 'Bliss' stands out with it's trippy synth parts and a catchy refrain. Muse recorded the vocals in mono, or with some kind of effect on it which suits the song really well. With 'Space Dementia' Muse goes for the epic approach in song writing. The track has some great piano parts and because of those, feels really dark and haunting. With 'Plug In Baby' we get a fast Muse track. It's almost a punk song. Heavy, catchy and some great siren vocals too. With 'Citizen Erased' Muse almost start a metal song. Another heavy track with great riffs and perfect vocal-lines. The effects used make the song sound futuristic. 'Darkshines' is a potential hitsingle. Really catchy and it has a nice bridge between the heavy and soft sides of Muse. With 'Feeling Good' we get a cool and fitting covertrack. The album ends with 'Megalomania'. Because of the use from an organ, recorded in a church, the track get's an epic atmosphere and is the perfect ending to a perfect album. With Origin Of Symmetry Muse deliver their ticket to succes. This album has everything a good album needs to have. Great songwriting, great melodies, a perfect atmosphere, originality and three skilled musicians. Muse got rid of their clone image with this album and I look forward to what they will bring in the future.Niels van Rongen
