Tomb of Trinkets - Drugged Lunch [Occult Supremacy Productions - 2013]Tomb of Trinkets is the new project from Maryland based noise maker Ryne Barber. His past projects (Hearse Fetish & Lurid Hallway) saw him focused in on industrialized Harsh Noise Wall. For this new project he leans more towards an intense industlized mix of power electronics 'n' harsh noise, though there are still some ‘wall-ish’ traits present in the projects sound. Drugged Lunch is the projects first release from late 2013, and it came in the form of CDR on Occult Supremacy Productions. The release appeared in a edition of 50 copies, so all been well you should be still be able to source this now…but if your unable to obtain a copy, you can still download it in digital form from the labels bandcamp. The release takes in two lengthy tracks, and first of these is Drugged Lunch I. Patient #92190. This just under thirteen & a half minute track is built around crude yet bombastic mixture of industrlized metal drum beats, looped cluster of ugly metallic drags, & junk metal rattling’s. On top of this fairly consistent yet intense base we get drifts of yelled ‘n’ fedback seared vocals, industlized harsh noise textured loops, and the odd dart into more static texturing noise…through it never goes all out wall-like, always staying more in the harsh noise/ power electronics camp. All told the tracks a good start to proceedings. The second & last track comes in the form the just under eighteen mintues of Drugged Lunch II. Patient #62989. This track opens with a single sustained high pitched noise tone, then we get a minute of so of this really wonky & discordant guitar strumming.. then we’re into the main body of the track. This is built around a chilling yet searing mixture of eerier scuttling ‘n’ dragging noise tones, minimal weaves of metal drum hits, buffeting ‘n’ flaying wind like textures, and noise textural sears. Fairly soon the yelled vocals make a brief appearance again, and around the four minute mark we get this creepy yet crude warbling harmonic texture (possible a detuned guitar loop), which is played over & over again in the dense sea of sound. This tracks feels a lot more lose & atmospheric compared with the first track, yet it’s still damn nasty in it’s attack…I’d say this track is my favourite of the two here, as I really like the crude looped harmonic element which gives the whole thing quite a creepy & unsettled edge It’s always interesting to see an artists try some a little new & different with their sound, sometime these experiments work, other times not… but I’m happy to report that they most certainly work here, and I’m rather taken by Drugged Lunch. Ryne has kept elements of his old sound(looped/ repetitive textures & horror type atmospheres), but he’s managed to develop & add onto it in new sonic components in a most rewarding manner…I look forward to hearing more of Tomb of Trinkets work in the future.
