Roger Ruskin Spear - Electric Shocks [Esoteric Records/Cherry Red - 2014]Electric Shocks was the first full length release from this multi-instrumentalist & former Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah band member. The album originally appeared on United Artists Records in 1972- this 2014 reissue brings together the albums original nine tracks along with the four tracks from Spear’s first EP Rebel Trouser. Sound-wise the album & EP are an often surreal & comedic dipped mixture of dada pop, jazz, 70’s rock, british music hall mockery, & playful yet cleverly conceived cover versions- with the whole thing been weaved with a host of sound effects, studio play-fullness & comic noises. It’s fair to say that both the LP & EP follow on from what the Bonzo’s did, but they also manger to stand up on their own as a rewarding & often memorable collection of songs. During his time with the Bonzo’s Spear was one of the key songwriters in the band( after Vivian Stanshall & Neil Innes) penning tracks such as "Shirt" ,"Tubas in the Moonlight" and "Trouser Press”. And clearly that ability to compose quirky, creatively arranged, and memorable song craft carries onto his early solo career- as pretty much everything here is both catchy & clever. With-in the Bonzo’s band he was credited with playing tenor sax and various contraptions- for this joint release his sonic repertoire is expanded taking in formal musical instruments such as: Bass Guitar, Saxophone( bass & tenor), Trumpet, Trombone, Clarinet, Electric Piano, Kazoo, Celesta, Organ, Piano, Bells, Glockenspiel & vocals. Along with less common musical fare such as: Morse Keys, Scalpel, & Auto-clapping Machine. He’s joined by the likes of Peter Banks( Ex Yes), The Flamin’ Groovies, Thunderclap Newman, B. J. Cole & The Putney Male Voice Choir(!). This new reissue comes with a 16 page booklet, which takes a whole host of pictures, album/ EP artwork, and a new 4 page write-up about the album it self. This is the first time the album has been widely released on CD- the only other CD version was a 2007 Japanese edition. All in all this is another very worthy & well put together reissue from Esoteric Records, and well worth tracking down if you enjoy quirky yet cleverly conceived & catchy 70’s fare that mixers together a fair few sonic genres in a entertaining manner.
