Blunt Force - Self Titled [Va Fongool Records - 2014]Blunt Force are a Norwegian three piece who summon up a blown-out, battering, brutal & noisey mix of improvised rock & jazz. The trio brings together guitarist Karl Haugland Bjorå, bassist Egil Kalman and drummer Ole Mofjell. This is the project first sonic offer, and it presents the listener with a single 28 minute track. The track opens in a battering & smothering dense chaos of drum barrages, scrabbling acidic guitar tails, and muffled ‘n’ blown-out bass wonderings. At around the two minute mark the three players pull themselves apart from their dense wall of sound, with the drums easing back, leaving sawing guitar fries & muffled bass fumbling’s to creating a morbid & off-kilter yet seared atmosphere. By around the 5th minute the shots of rapid ‘n’ crowded drums battering back in, and once again the track lurches into denser more suffocating territory once more. The remained of the track moves between the dense & battering drum ribbed attacks, and more pare back off-kilter ‘n’ sinister improv between guitar ‘n’ bass, with subtle percussive darts. All told the track makes for a both intense yet rewarding bit of muffled ‘n’ blown-out improv So if your after careering, dense & nasty cross breed of improvised rock & jazz Blunt Forces' Self titled début may well be worthy of your time- as the trio certainly know how to create a searing yet rewarding & eventful noise brew.
