Tales of the Bloody Bloody Killer - The Cobweb Hotel [Corpse-Grained Series - 2014]The Cobweb Hotel is a newish 3” CD-R by HNW duo Tales of the Bloody Bloody Killer. The release is part of Julien Skrobek’s Corpse-Grained Series, which may or may not have run it’s course (the website seems to be dead at the moment). I’m not sure what the theme of this particular series entails, as I couldn’t find much information on it, but each release appears to be: a 3” CD-R, in an envelope, and of the HNW variety. Some of the other artists that have appeared in the series are: Vormir, Nascitari, and some of Richard Ramirez’s projects. Tales of the Bloody Bloody Killer is an act I’m not that familiar with, but is one of the many projects of Scott Kindberg (Ginger Cortes, Silver Moult, She Walks Crooked, Unusual Affairs). This time with a new partner in crime on board. The Cobweb Hotel contains a single 15:05 track of blistering harsh noise wall sterilization. The piece starts out with an extended sample (I think?) of slowly stroked bass strings played in eerie repetition. An equally creepy, old woman’s voice speaks over the menacing strokes. It’s hard to make out what she’s saying, but her scratchy voice gives the intro a real creepy Hansel and Gretel vibe. The voice trails off as the bass drones on in slight reverberation. A momentary disruption of static fuzz breaks things up, an omen of darker tidings ahead. At 4:06 it’s wall time! Rapidly flowing, crispy static combines with low end bass judders, bobbing to and fro. As the track progresses the juddering becomes even more taut and rapid, sounding like a sonic battering ram. At times you almost hear a faint hint of some vague musicality struggling under the weight of the of the dense static field. It’s likely just the trick of whatever soundsource they’re manipulating. The track ends it’s final minute with a lot of movement and some piercing feedback to shake us out of our wall trance.
The Cobweb Hotel is solid addition to Kindberg and co’s catalog. A dynamic slice of wall-making in a sexy red envelope. It’s probably worth your while to check out the whole Corpse-Grained Series, if that’s your sort of thing. Of course, it might take some digging to exhume a copy. Hal Harmon
