Flössin - Lead Singer [Ache Records - 2005]Another Kid606 project. Yeah ! Well, not really yeah ! The last few 606 music I heard was rather disappointing. But anyway, Flössin is centred on Christopher Willits, and that is good news. Flössin is three men: Zach Hill, drummer with Hella, Miguel Depedro (aka Kid606) and Christopher Willits. The most recognisable player is Zach Hill, whose spastic, frenetic style of drumming is the most prominent aspect of Lead Singer (featuring no singer by the way). Willits is mostly known for his minimal / ambient guitar / laptop music (check the review of Mujo, his album with Taylod Deupree, in our archive), and I gues s most of you know the Kid’s electronic (and often drilling) music. The trio convened in December 2003 for an improvised session, and Lead Singer is a selection of what they put to tape on that very occasion. What you get is constantly overlapping music, with players half of the time playing as if they were totally alien to each other, and the other half of the time playing more “together” without being really “together “ as a unit. This might scare some people, but it does work wonders at time. Hill chaotic’s polyrhythm are fascinating, and both Willits and Depedro realise that, taking a seat in the background, creating beautiful sound texture interrupted by sudden burst of noises. This may not be the album of the year, but it’s a very interesting record, one more in the already extremely interesting catalogue of Christopher Willits. François Monti
