Tyrant Flycatcher - Sacsayhuaman [Neon Wall Series /Lurker Bias - 2016]Lurker Bias presents Sacsayhuaman, the first offering in the Neon Walls series by Tyrant Flycatcher. Available as a limited edition cassette or a digital download from this Chicagoland outfit. Best I can tell, this series focuses on HNW acts, though neither the cover art nor sounds contained come off as particularly colorful. That said, a wicked slice of wall making ensues. Sacsayhuaman is a single 32 minute wall of low-end pummeling and free-flowing static. Listening to this intently, it almost sounds like there’s something musical going on underneath all the cacophonous layers. It’s like you’re scanning through a radio dial, the antenna faintly picks up a station. Through a mass of crackle and hiss, you can vaguely make out the impression of a band playing, but it’s like a mirage...a phantom...hidden in a sonic maelstrom. At times it kind of reminds me of the Regler CD I reviewed earlier this year. While I’m fairly certain this isn’t an instrument based wall project, it does have a similar organic quality. It’s a rather unrelenting affair, with lots of stressed, meaty tones, unfolding in a battering ram ferocity. Far from a truly static piece, there’s quite a bit of movement and shifts, ebbs and flows. Without a doubt, a tasty little offering to wet our appetites for further installments of the Neon Walls series. Hal Harmon
