Joli - I'm Already Dead Inside Anyways [Friendly Otter - 2016]I'm Already Dead Inside Anyways is a recent CDR release from Joli- the wall noise project of Jason Wolpert from Spokane, Washington. The discs takes in two lengthy slices of stark & tortuous wall craft, that are both searing yet entrancing. Fitting the bleak title of the release, the CDR comes with a single sided sleeve featuring a monochrome & stark pictures of razor blades & nails. All making clear there is no hope present here at tall- either sonically or visually. The CDR came in a edition of 30 copies, though it’s unclear if any are still available or not. First out of the gate is “Apathetic. Pointless”, and this comes in at just shy of the thirty minute mark. The ‘wall’ is a suitable battering, barren, and deeply seared bit of dense noise craft. It brings together three or four layers of deep & weathered billowings, grainy & tense rushing’s, and rapid ‘n’ rumbling churnings. There is certainly a searing industrial like feel to some of the textures here, though there is also a more battering storm/elemental feel too. All of the layers are fairly simple in their patterns, though there are the occasional shifts in both their speed, pattern setting, and intensity- though these are kept fairly minimal though-out the tracks runtime, with the pace never falling much below throat ripping intense. All told this is a satisfying enough slice of seared wall-craft, with the subtle shifts in the tracks layers keeping ones mind locked in to it through-out. The second track on offer is the title track, and this is the longer of the two at just over the forty three minute mark. Not letting the intensity drop for even a second this track is seqenced in direct after the last track, and really it just carries on the taut & hopeless battering of the first track. To start with the ‘wall’ brings together a tense two pattern attack of churning ‘n’ grinding low-end, & Chugging ‘n’ hissing mid’s. By around the 5th minute the patterns have seemingly become less defined & firm in their blend; and it feels as if each element is trying to violently barrow & eat its way into each other. As a result we get some shifting sub-tones appearing around the edges of the dense mass of sound, and these nicely shifting from deep bass grinds, to splintering & burning churns, through to a blend of both settings. Once again the initial layers are quite simple in their make-up, but as the track progresses one mind gets more lost in the thick ranging maelstrom of the ‘wall’. Of the two tracks here I’d say this is my favourite as the original texturally set is most effective, and when it starts to grind into it’s self one gets this great feeling of battering & bleak freefall. I'm Already Dead Inside Anyways isn’t really any great departure from the projects past releases sound, neither is it mould breaking in wall-noise terms. But if you have a taste for terminal bleak, nasty & unrelenting HNW- then both tracks here are worthy slices of suicidal themed walled-craft. Roger Batty
