Raging Speedhorn - How the Great have fallen [SPV - 2005]

Raging Speedhorn, they look like a bunch of small-time thugs, local hooligans who should not be able of much more than unashamed brutality. If you think that way, well, guess what… You’re right.

How the great have fallen is their third album, and it should see the band’s profile rise a little more, as it has been the case with every album. From big selling demo to a debut album that disappointed the underground but garnered them many new friends, to an uncompromising second album that saw them become a sort of established act in Europe, outside their native UK where they are already part of the “big” metal bands”.

I’ve never been really into what they were doing, but I have to admit they are getting better. At the time of the release of their first album, there was a sort of buzz surrounding them; people were saying it was some sort of punishing mix of sludge and wild metalcore. What I heard was real poor, I couldn’t not hear the difference with countless of other mediocre aggressive hardcore bands. A couple of years later, I saw them live at some festival, supporting the release of their second album. I still wasn’t much into the music, but it was better. They were good at what they were doing, and most of all, they believed in their music.

All in all, I was a bit suspicious when this CD unexpectedly landed in my mailbox. After having listened to this album a few times, I can safely say this is not for me. However, it’s not annoying or anything. It’s well done, the production is good, you hear the passion they put in their music, and of course it IS really punishing.

Raging Speedhorn is doing what I’d call though guys music. I’m not tough, I’m all frail with glasses and everything. But I ain’t emo either, so I can take heaviness, loudness and brutality. Over all, this music brings echoes of Slapshot-style hardcore mixed with Pantera-style heavy metal and a little touch of Eyehategod’s muddy, heavy and slow sounds. Of course, what dominates Speedhorn’s album is sweat, testosterone and straightforward aggression, but unfortunately there is nothing twisted, perverted, dirty or rotten in here. It’s all conventional macho attitudes.

How the great have fallen is good for fans and of course will bring them new ones. But people who like a touch of “something else” in their music shouldn’t bother. I actually think the problem with me is that there probably is a huge gap between me and them in terms of experiences and worldviews, and it shows in the music.
