Sutekh - Born Again: Collected Remixes 1999- 2005 [Leaf - 2005]

I’m at a disadvantage or advantage with this release, depending on how you look at it. As I’ve only heard one of the original tracks. But if that tracks anything to go by, then the other tracks here are easily stand alone tracks in their own right.

Way beyond some Dj’s idea of just strapping a new beat to the bottom of the track and calling it a remix. Sutekh takes certain elements of the original then builds a new track from the ground up. Born again is a double disk compilation of his remix work. Disk one covers 2004 to 2005 and disk two 1999 to 2002.

So first of lets talk about disk one, my favourite of the two disks. The track I already knew was Hanne’s Hukkkelberg’s Ease. Here it’s reborn into a wonderful merry go round vibe. Hanne’s altered voice bobbing back and forth through the airy/happy ambience. Dapayk’s Tyffaniecell (March of the Valkyries mix) is great bit of head nodding funky techno- with a melody that for some reason brings to mind the theme from Nightrider. It has a great crunchy feeling to it, with splatters of noise like elements. Murcof’s Memoria (trisagion mix) ties in the trademark struck piano cords of Murcof’s work, with a head nodding baseline. And an odd Arabic sample, to great effect. Giving a great danceable, ominous track.

Sadly disk two of the set doesn’t shine so bright, Too many of the tracks seem samey.Just Relying on funky techno retreads, with not enough invention. Sure it’s all enjoyable enough as more invigorating and challenging beat fodder for clubs and parties background music. But it doesn’t seem to have the same spark as the first disk. But of course disk two is of early work from 1999- 2002, so I guess he was finding his feet and ear for invention.
