Ennio Morricone - Crime and dissonance [Ipecac - 2005]Crime and dissonance is a darkly heady psychedelic audio chocolate box, full of twist and turns. Taking in Morricone’s less know and experimental soundtrack work from through out the 60’s and 70’s.Making an alternative and surprising look at one of the great soundtrack composers.
The air through out is high with stop and start instrumentation often splattered with bump and grinding moans. Funky guitar struts hit against church organ swoops. It’s difficult to choose favourite tracks, as each track has its own inventive surprise to offer. But a few of my favourites are: the twanging off key oriental air of Ric Happening, which brings to mind watching a strangely sinister dance routine performed by an Asian women with whited out face. The bouncing Jew harp lead melody of Rapimnnto In Campo Aperto, that’s embellished by sawing string work.Ninna Nanna Per Adulteri with its Rosemary’s baby’s like female voice chant, coloured by sweet music box melody, giving an air of rested slightly edgy ambience. The sinister bass and stuck piano cord of the ghostly atmospheric 1970 With out doubt this double disk is a perfect primmer for Morricone’s mastery of soundtrack audio art. And proof (if it was needed) that’s there a lot more to composing great soundtrack work than passionless Hollywood string work. Roger Batty
