Orbit Service - Songs of Eta Carinae [Beta-lactam Ring - 2006]Orbit service come off like a mix of Pink Floyd, American indie, post rock, some electronics and sprinkle of pop too. Songs Of Eta Carinae is their second album and it’s an enjoyable enough ride into outer space, which I can see been huge, in certain circles. For my part I have to say it’s not done a lot for me: it’s played well enough, the songs are memorable enough and they have started to carve their own sound out. I think the problem is it doesn’t have the ‘wow’ factor. Not enough here to grab my attention to wanting to play it again. That said there are some nice tracks that have started to worm their way into my mind. Take the electronic beat tinged rock of Asphyxia, which conjured up a nice laid back haunting atmosphere, for some reason it seems to bring to mind a more proggy take on Nine Inch Nails. Or the piano lead rock of Sparrows, very much conjuring up a track that could have appeared on Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon, but with modern production, and slight gothic inclinations. So in summing up, nice enough stuff and I can see there’s a market for it, I wish them all the best. May be, if I was a bigger fan of Dark Side Of The Moon, it might do more for me. But sadly I can’t see myself becoming a fan.Roger Batty
