Head Control system - Murder Nature [Jester Records - 2006]Murder nature is a twisted, often catchy mix of Prog metal, nu metal, edgy piano elements and touches of horror soundtrack elements, the mighty Goblin are brought to mind in a few places. I have to admit, I very much had doubts about this, since the disappointment with Ulver’s (Kristoffer Rygg, main band) Blood inside and the murmurs of this been bland nu metal, I put off hearing this, but finally hearing it, I’m presently surprised. Sure it’s far the from most original album, you can hear traces of tool, prog rock, soundtrack element’s and even yes the dreaded nu metal, but it done in such a way that it clicks as an intelligently well thought out album, that twist and turns though lots of interesting tempo changes and varying mood. As expected Rygg’s on top form, his instantly recognisable vocals soaring all over the place, nice to hear back in a metal format. The musical backing is nice concise and tightly wound metal with atmospheric piano under belly- each song is memorable in its own right. A very enjoyable ride, showing yet again Rygg has the abilty to shape shift and make it work. I hope this is more than just a one off album, because it will interesting to how the sounds changes or grows on the next album. For all things jester and to buy direct go here Roger Batty
