Darc Mind - Symptomatic of A Greater III [Anticon - 2006]This dark and edgy, ahead of it’s time rap masterpiece was original meant to have released back in 1997, but with the fall of Loud records it remained unreleased. Now Anticon gives us back a chapter in hip-hops evolution and a damn fine album to boot. Darc minds sound is built around moody and shadowy soundworld, heady with smoky jazzy and grimy funk loops. All neatly fitting onto tense beat work and Kevroc's worldly wise or world tired distinctive tones, cleverly and thoughtfully placed words, conjuring up some great imagery, a long way from mainstream raps cannon fodder banter. The album seems to vibrate with dark alleyways, clashing with deadly dealings. Watchful eyes fixing on it’s target, as it cross towards graffiti slash tower block, the heavy sun goes down into a purple smog sunset. It feels like the work of the city and the sprawling and decaying suburbs, bad debit days spent in nearly empty bars, dead end jobs, which threaten to fall apart in shaking hands. It gets under your skin and stays there. I doubt we’ll see many hip hop albums of this quality and depth this year. It’s nice to see Anticon back on target with this, after a few ok-ish releases, seriously go get now album, you will not be disappointed. To buy direct and more get more info go here
