Nina Nastasia - On Leaving [Fat Cat - 2006]Nina Nastasia On leaving, is an enchanting collection of tuneful folk tinged singer song writer songs, that utilizes acoustic guitars and gentle heart-warming piano gold. Embellished ever now and then with haunted string work. Each song plays out its own perfect painted lyrical tale, of broken love, secret affairs, small town’s ups and downs. The album flows wonderfully from one track to the next, each track drifting in about the three minute mark, never outstaying there welcome. They present there finely tuned melody, hovered over by pretty earthy voice, which offers up wonderfully descriptive prose that puts the listener right into the tales she tells, it almost you’re your hovering over her shoulder as the situation and tales play out. A few of my Favours are: Jim’s Room- with slow haunted acoustic guitar melody, smouldering under neat with string shudder, it seems to tell the tale of a woman who either has a secret lover or was abused- both beautiful and deeply moving. The exquisite strolling piano and acoustic guitar summer dieing half -joy half- sadness of Settling Song. She really has the ability to put some much honest, emotion and charm into even the most simply of song There nothing fancy or experimental here, just honest well written songs, that invite you back again and again to relive there many earthy wonders. Easily one of the records of the year. Roger Batty
