Mudsuckers - S/T [Important Records - 2006]Mudsuckers Self titled album is a droning mix of improvised Rock ,swamp folk, noise , what every you fancy. It’s collaboration between Yellow Swans Pete Swanson and Gabe Saloman, the Charalambide's Tom Carter and Robert Horton.Which in-between the dense layers sound some offers really eerily, beautiful, intricate sound moments. You just have to dig deep, Like the best music this takes time to reveal it’s self. Endocrine Disrupters opens up proceedings, the longest track here at just over 17 minutes. Propelled by a steady rock beat that’s then buried under the weaving tangents of sound. We drop down in avant jazz warble, creepy drone, fields of freshly ploughed distortion. Mid way the drums drop out and we’re left in a complex puzzle of musical moments, nearly melodic organ pump, drifting guitar trails, alarm going off electronics, starting to boil swamp noise. Really this feels like one of those magic eye pictures, the deeper to stretch you hearing into it the more you hear, there really seems layer upon layer’s of sound here – all you got to is strip them away. Longjar Mudsuckers feels like a denser rainy forest, all manner of pipe chirpings, hovering and unfolding guitar expanse, colourful snthy floats, coming into focus drone work, and deep down it seems to recall early Tangerine Dream in it’s strange alien meditate sate. Mudsuckers have manged to borrow elements from each of there respected projects and come up with something very much of its own. A highly enjoyable dense trip, leaving the listener feeling often like an intrepid explorer. Roger Batty
