Government Alpha - Venomous Cumulus Cloud [Troniks - 2007]Venomous Cumulus Cloud kicks up one hell of a dense psychedelic shifting kaleidoscope of noise. Balancing perfectly the need to be brutal and complex in its texture and use of sound. Simply put this is one hell of a ride, its prime noise on the same level as some of Merzbow's work. It’s not surprising one should mention Merzbow, as Government Alpha who is one Yasutoshi Yoshida is japanese and you can certainly hear nods towards Merzbow, in the way the sound is put across and the noise element are mixed together. But Yasutoshi has managed to add in his own touches and way of going about noise construction to make this his own, instead of an imitation. If anything it has a colder possible darker feel than Merzbow work. Ripping storms of sound erupting into jagged rhythmic pluses of sound. Searing atmospheric sound heat over hang drone atmospherics. From the start it pulls you off you feet and forces your mind through vast changing, expanding and contracting corridors of different coloured sound. Rarely letting up its pace or face ripping noise heat, but always keeping your mind occupied and engulfed complete by the shifting and swirling textures. The only downside is I found the tracks a little on the short side with most running around the 5 minute mark with only the last track clocking in a 15 minute mark. It would have be nice to see what he can do on a large 30 minute plus sound canvas, but this is only a minor point that mustn’t take away from how rewarding and dense this really is. Really if you have even a passing interest noise this is worth picking up. And if you a big noise fan, this is a must have. Can’t wait to hear what the future holds for Government Alpha. Roger Batty
