Gogoo - Long, Lointain [Baskaru Records - 2007]Long, Lointain brings together 10 quirky, melancholy and often very strange tracks that mix togeather often looped & sometimes sinister child like melodies with strange field recordings. Falling somewhere between ambient ,folk and electronica The pieces utilize lo-fi dusty electronics and synth drones, acoustic guitars and odd percussive elements/ field recordings like; slow apple crunches, wet slashing / pulling sounds, pebble movements, environmental sounds And all manner of odd sound fodder. It all creates a rather strange if understated in places audio adventure that feels like music to strange dream or yellowed memory of childhood. Where you’re playing happily enough but somehow it’s tinged by a strange sadness, as an autumnal day blows and pours its daylight away out side your bedroom window. Also included on the disk are four short films at a minute a piece using child like drawings, fogged and aged camera work, which are effective it's just a pity they couldn’t have lasted a little longer. An album that mangers to conjure up its own strange atmosphere that is hardly world changing or something I’d return to often. But in it’s own small yellowed effective way gets one to look back over your shoulder to a past self deep in sad play on a toy cluttered carpet. Roger Batty
