Bowline - S/T [Sonoris - 2007]Bowline gives the listener four tracks of often doomy, stormy and improvised drone works. The projects brings together David Maranha(Organ Eye,Osso Exótico, plus solo work) and Francesco Dillon(Alter Ego, plus various collaborations). The pair utilize Cello(played by Dillon), Hammond organ, violin, vox amplifier(with Dillon's Cello Signal), Glass Harmonica, Tremolo & Distortions Peddles( Played by Maranha). The first three tracks tend more towards autumnal and black storm clouded sky drones & pitches of sound and feedback. With the cello's melancholy sawing and bow been very prevalent, often taking sometime to open like decaying flowers slowly filling the room with the sawing and discordant tones. The forth and last track is the longest here at just over 20 minute mark and offers up slightly brighter and more melodic collection of unfolding drones and improvised tones, feeling a bit like sunshine through leaf fall after the storm is all but gone. It’s a nice harmonic exit to the album, that’s not with out the odd fold of discordance. This is drone and improvised music that seems to capture a real feeling of loss and overcast emotional states, with an brighter if not all that rosy exit piece. Roger Batty
