Grouper - Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill [Type - 2008]

Grouper sound sits between echoed and dreamy guitar pop of the 80’s, folk/rock and ambience. At the centre of the project is Liz Harris who seemingly plays everything and producers the felt, misty and haunting vocals that float, shimmer and soak through all of Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill.

Each song here seems to shimmer, float or melt into being painted with drifting and hazed effect muffled electric and acoustic guitar, some minimal electronics, murky yet warming production and of course Ms Harris haunted female vocals that come off as a mix of pained female indie meets folky hurt/ strung out. Though through out there’s  an haunted, emotional pulling and out of time feeling about it all, with some of the songs shimmer and gliding with memorable harmonic traces.  The songs as a whole seem a little interchangeable and samey Harris doesn’t seem to change pace or add anything daring or surprising into the mix, she really is over playing the haunted, pained and hazed vibe so by the end of Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill it’s become more than a little dull and ineffective. It’s a pity really as her sound is original enough and could produce something very reward I’m sure, but sadly Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill is not it.

An album I started off quite enjoying and got soaked up by its dream melancholy ebb and drift. But sadly as the album went on it became clear it all sounded too samey with little or no variation. She really needs to write varied and compelling songs to go along with her original sound and not just rethreading the same sonic path over and over again.
