Varghkoghargasmal - Drowned In Lakes [Tumult - 2008]Drowned in Lakes take on ambient black metal is very bizarre and unequal with it’s mix of wonky and lo-grade keyboard, blacked surf and cinematic clear edged guitar tones taking centre stage. Backed up by shambling drums, assorted rain/ grim effects and the odd muffled blacked croak. Varghkoghargasmal are a one man project from Germany and this appears to be the projects first full length album after a few tapes and a split 7inch with Octobers Falls. The tracks go from wavering, haphazard yet atmospheric instrumental tracks like the opener Autumn Rain which consists of layers of warbling cheap ‘n’ nasty synth playing that goes from; vibe like,to low grade synth throb, to rudimentary and clunky piano like. All played over by wondering drums and of course rain sounds. To more up-beat tracks with surf lined and 60’s reverb guitar tones, bontempi organ drones and bleak harmonics, shambling drums and vocals that go from muffled grim tones to specking in ocultic sounding tongues to Viking like clear chanting to deranged monk like. Drowned in Lakes offen feels like some one has been whizzed back to the 60’s with out a distortion peddle and asked to get a cheesy bar band to play black metal. Really the whole album is fabulous odd, bizarre, kind of grimly groove and very one off experience. Certainly not one for your straight ahead metal fan, but those of us who have grown from metal’s great sonic tree into stranger and more weird musical tastes you'll find a lot to enjoy, puzzle over, grimly slow dance and possible even do grim impression of the shadows air guitar too.
