The Fighting Cocks - Music for lapdancers [Fekete Galamb Zene - 2008]The Fighting Cocks make a very English and often comic mix of punk, rap, easy listening and cheesy music sampling/turntabling, pop, gypsy and world music, film samples and all manner of other madness. Think a deranged cross between Chumbawamba, Jive Bunny, Pop Will Eat Itself, drunken doo wop and plundertronics, chugging punked guitars. Music For Lapdancers is their second album on their label Fekete Galamb Zene You’ve really got to have a sense of humor and acceptance of pretty much any and every musical genre thrown at you in a cheeky, often big beat lined manner that's often covered with lots of male and female chanting, yelling, and sort of rapping to enjoy and get this, otherwise I could imagine it to be very trying. For myself I think it’s a wonderful slice of pumped up often crumbly tuneful devil may care sonic madness, that’s quirky, funny and at times quite risky in some of its lyrical targets. In all the album takes in 20 tracks and near on an hour of mayhem that rarely lets up its energetic pace, and a few of my particular enjoyable moments come in the form of: We Are The Fighting Cocks with its pumped chuck berry/50s rock ‘n’ roll sample that kicks into euphoric punked guitar, beats, scratching and loads of chanting/shouting. There’s Nothing Going On Between Marvin and Tamara which takes and mixes manic gypsy music samples, chugging guitar, ramshackle female chants and a great nasty metallic guitar sample midway . Take Off That Veil with its risky (if funny) lyrics, Indian tabla and jolly Indian music sample that is sure to get well and truly stuck in you head. No Candy with its 50s girl pop punked up vibe. Don’tchya Know which sounds like sped up banjo playing vs. a track from the Muppets album over a stomping beat, hand claps and loads of chanting and shouting. So as you can see you can expect anything and everything to happen here, but it's always done in a playful & cheeky manner- things never get too serious or heavy here.
A really manic, inventive and comic lined party of an album that's sure to have you smiling stupidly, jiving in your chair and generally having a great time. To find out more about The Fighting Cocks' mad world log into their website here. Roger Batty
