Sempervirens - Dirge of the Dying year [Stellar Auditorium - 2008]Dirge of the Dying year is a highly compelling and shifting collection of dream like and subtle surreal ambient sound crafting tracks- that literally gives one the feeling of walking or drifting through strange dream world between dimensions. The tracks are built around a mix of highly heady, creative often shifting and dense field recordings, very organic often harmonic ambient drones, tuneful yet mournful organ risers, the odd coral or classic sample, and even the odd touch of clear guitar harmonics and dramatics on a few tracks. And through there’s a heavy use of field recording textures through out, the tracks harmonic arch and Compositional structure are divined and clear- this is not cryptic and drifting like something released by the Mystery Seas label. I guess you could compare the vibe to the ambient & field recording swirled moments on Future Sounds of London’s Life forms. Through you can define the start of one track and beginning another; like the best ambient this is best taken as one head-trip as you seemingly drifting from one highly descriptive and wonderfully made sonic picture to the next. A very heady, hypotonic and rewarding slice of active and dense ambience that’s perfect for tripped out daydreaming or welcome and adventurous escape from the grinds of the everyday world Roger Batty
