BT.HN. - Retrospective [Pointless Blank Records - 0000]This is a compilation of Sam McKinlay’s (The Rita, Vice wears Black Hose, etc) more horror film sampled manipulated & straight noise based project BT.HN. Which started out live back in 2006 & is still releasing the odd item today. This 75 minute disc brings together 6 rare & out of print tracks; and it’s wholly consistent, fiery & rewarding horror drenched collection of tracks. BT.HN. sound is a lot more shifting & textural varied than McKinlay’s most famous project The Rita; sure there are the odd dwells in Wall like noise here, but for the most part this is more brutal and active straight ahead noise attack. Your typical BT.HN. track seemingly opens with a 50 or 60’s horror film dialogue sample, there are none of McKinlay’s Gaillo obsessions here- with samples been a lot more gothic horror like talking about werewolf’s, vampires, witches & Satan ect. After the dialogue samples McKinlay either morphs and noises up the sample or goes into roaring attacks of noise matter. Often mixed in with these are seriously noised up vocal attacks that go from guttural, to roared, sleazily barked- these vocals have more to do with extreme metal than power electronics or noise and are highly effective with in the shifting framework of the crashing & howling electro noise attacks. On offer here are three 20 minute tracks & three 5 minute ones & each track very effectively shifts, bends & ducks though all manner of tone, depth & sonic content. Making each track a great roaring & ripping noise Rolla Costa ride, which even when it’s burning white hot & noisy still mangers to somehow keep it’s thunder struck, Frankenstein buzzing & ghoulish graveyard digging gothic horror air about it all. This wonderful & near perfect compilation comes in a great screen-printed black & white ink on light brow card sleeve that features horror comic book drawings of a witch which suits the project & disc perfectly. So in summing a highly worthwhile & well presented compilation of this lessen know McKinlay project- which is just a good as his other projects to buy direct drop in here Roger Batty
