An Innocent Young Throat Cutter - Mrs Wardh [Urashima - 2009]

‘Mrs Wardh’ finds this two piece Italian & USA giallo influenced HNW project doing their sonic tribute to Sergio Martino's 1970’s  classic giallo  film ‘The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh’ (Lo Strano Vizio Della Signora Wardh). An Innocent Young Throat Cutter are Richard Ramirez(Werewolf Jerusalem, Black Leather Jesus, ect) & Cristiano Renzoni (Alo Girl & runner of the Urashima label),

Following the Urashima label's distinctive house design the Black on black vinyl once more comes in the silver ink on black card slip sleeve. With on the front cover featuring a silver inked  picture of ‘Mrs Ward’ aka  Edwige Fenech; French/Italian actress who  appeared in many of Sergio Martino's giallos along with other giallos such as: Mario Bava’s ‘Five Dolls for an August Moon’, Guliano Carnimeo’s ‘The Case of the Bloody Iris’ & Andrea Bianchi’s kinky & blood soaked Giallo ‘Strip Nude for Your Killer’. The albums text & lettering is just in a casual silver pen typeface- which doesn’t seem as groovy or powerful as the more 60’s & 70’s type faces Urashima have used in the past(but this is just a miner quibble). There’s a rather nice colour inlay slip with a scene from the film on one side & the on the other a Beretta Pistol with the Urashima label logo on it’s grip!-very cool

Anyway onto the sounds inside- Side one features just one near on 15 minute track entitled ‘Julie Wardh’. The track starts out with 20 seconds or so of: dripping, echoed female laughter & slapping tones that are taking from one of the films more tripped out & perverse scenes. Then it jumps into a tight jittering wall of static noise, that’s under towed by this shifting tone that goes from been semi-harmonic drone like, to bathroom pipe like groaning, onto deep yet active rumble like. As the track goes on this shifting tone becomes faster as if something is travelling down a pipe at high speed; this is nicely counter-balanced by the jittering static tones on top. At about the four minute mark this shifting central tone becomes more roaring or deep bass like boiling in its feel, with the static jitters also getting more aggravated & tense in their attack. By around the seven minute mark the shifting tone  has once more settled back down to a droning rumble & the jittering static tone once more takes centre stage; the jittering tone soon becomes longer & more ripping or tearing in it's intent as the shifting tone becomes more quiet, eerier atmospheric & creepy than when the piece started. All told the tracks a great shifting slice of creative HNW making.

Onto side two & we have tow tracks on offer; ‘Next!’ which comes in just over the four minute mark & ‘Brink of Madness’ which nears the ten minute mark. ‘Next!’ starts out with a few seconds of male & female Italian conversation from the film before it drops into an active wall of static jitter. It has an almost juddering electronic synth pulse about it to start with, but as it goes on the jitter elements nicely shift tone & pitch giving the feeling like this is either slowed down, jittered & buckled music or dialogue.

‘Brink of Madness’ starts out with a lowdown & quite thin sounding water hammering on a tin bath like tone, before it soon kicks in a lot thicker & deeper with it’s wall of sound mixing together both bath filling roars & static crunch. As the track goes on it splits into a more roaring pipe like tone & a jittering static like tones, which could indicate the bath is filling up more. By about the four minute mark Ramirez &  Renzoni have ground- down the bath filling tone to a playful but nerve searing & hopping jitter; as the roaring tone takes centre stage for a bit this becomes a bit like the sound of a long pulling of a cork down a steel pipe. But pretty soon the track shifts once more becoming more hammering rain like & juddering static like in its attack. The track nicely bends in & out of it’s self in a very clever tonally noise shifting way & morphing manner; before it starts with rapid stabing static tones(maybe someone’s been stabbed in the bath?) and then the track starts to thin out before another few minutes of Italian dialogue which mentions Julie Wardh's name. Truly it's an amazing track, that will more than silence HNW critics who claim the scene possess no talent- the tonally shifts here are simply breath taking!.

All in all another splendid & quality bound release from the excellent Urashima label; with both Ramirez & Renzoni working harsh & punishing sonic wonders through-out both sides of vinyl here. For more info, hear samples & to buy direct go to here.
