Insurgent/TFT - The Shape of Static To Come [TTM Incisioni Musicali - 2010] | ‘The Shape Of Static To Come’ is a highly rewarding, involving & brutal emersion in static rich HNW & minimalistic HNW making taking in a thirty five minute track a piece from Chicago based Insurgent & Italian based TFT. First up we have the Insurgent track which has the lengthy title of ‘A Hail Of Burning Swords Consuming Your Western Ideologies’. This tracks made-up of a wonderfully complex & moorish map of static tones that take-in: all manner of judders, jitters, jumps & hacks. Along with banks of cackle and multiple layers of different types of static, up to sudden and more seared & drilling pitched highs; yet there’s a definite minimalistic & striped feeling to a lot of it . The track has a very distinctive & original take on the HNW genre, sure it's utilizing static patterns like many others have done in the past- but it’s the way the static keeps morphing, shifting, growing & receding that makes this so special & unique. It’s difficult to discuss in depth tone movement & texture patterns as there’s so much going on here with the patterns of static shifting in a rather active & rapid manner. Though this is far from randomly thrown together a load of static tones; patterns do re-occur & there’s a really slick yet nasty air to the composition which at times really makes you winch when the more seared & piercing high pitches kick-in. Truly the tracks a jagged & juddering joy from start to finishing & I really can’t put this track on with-out seeing it to the end each time I play it. So secondly & lastly we of course have the TFT track which is simply entitled ‘TTI’. This track is once more quite stripped in it’s feel, but it’s less complex in its detail & movement than the first track. The track is built around a thick & often throbbing cable feedback roll to which TFT adds: tense hums, boiling rolls, jumping hacks & tight metallic scapes. The whole track has this wonderful juddering, highly nervous & urgent feel about it that really sucks you in & does'nt let you go until thirty five minutes later & even then you think it’s going to suddenly jerk to life once more. As usual with anything put out on the excellent TTM Incisioni Musicali label (which is run by Alessio of TFT) this has a nice slick & modern look to it . With the CDR coming in a oversized bag with folded colour inlay that’s coloured in striking black, grey & red- it takes in a picture of multiple red lightning strikes on the black & grey background. It's all topped off with minimalistic white & red text on the front & back, with the back featuring a small write-up about the intentions of each track. All this tops off perfectly the two great tracks inside. Truly a great split with great and arty presentation…so don’t hang around pick up one of the criminally ltd copies(only 30 in all!!) of this today. Roger Batty
