Jazkamer - Peanuts [Pica disc - 2010]Jazkamer’s Peanuts is an experimental field recording album and part of a series of cd releases the group did in 2010 where a cd of the groups varying styles was released each month. ‘Peanuts’ is an incredibly quiet field recording album with occasional appearances of drumming and varied sounds. The album goes through seven tracks with different lengths and even at max volumes are quieted without any sudden dynamic bursts or hint of intent to deviate from quietness. To someone like me who doesn’t understand this concept at all, it is difficult to get what is going on, and to be blunt it kind of kills me that the tracks are purely quiet. With a total playtime of less than half an hour I was able to listen to the album over and over again without really feeling like I listened to anything at all. Occasionally something interesting happens, but that is just what happens when you are intentionally searching for something interesting from this album. The sound of crackling is ever present much like that of a crunching peanut shell, and sounds I recognized where only those that were incredibly obvious like a seagull. The constant hiss and crackling is satisfying if I’m approaching it from my own biased perspective, but even with an open mind I was unable to really reiterate what I just listened to.
