Last Rape/Pollutive Static - Split CD [Loveearthmusic - 2011]

This barbaric, sleazed and often active two way HNW split is between Texas based Last Rape(aka Texas noise legends Richard Ramirez & Sean E. Matzus) and London based Pollutive Static(aka Hal Hutchinson).

The pro-pressed cdr offers up five tracks in all- two lengthy 15 minute plus tracks from Last Rape and three 5 to 12 minute tracks from Pollutive static. The Cd comes in a pro-printed black & white glossy slip case which features some great & highly fitting perverse and deranged artwork from Italian artists and noise maker Nicola Vinciguerra. The front cover features a grim drawing of a knife, a selection of  severed  human head featuring an eye and brain matter, a sliced/split penis and a set broken teeth…lovely stuff!.

Moving onto the seared and unforgiving noise inside- first up we have Last Rape's first track which is entitled “Close Your Eyes” and comes in at 15.53 mark. The track starts out being  built around a muffled and stark rumble, and a more defined layer of scouring and juddering static texturel. As the track goes on the defined static texture gets more active, caustic and seared in it’s movement, and a caught static drag is added to the wall of sound- this new element nicely shifts and tears along a quite a random but devastating manner to begin with, but over time it becomes more slicing and plough like in it’s feel. In the tracks last few minutes a really neat bobbing and glowing harmonic like pulse ‘n’ swirl can be just made out in the tearing and ripping sea of noise.

Up next is the second Last Rape track “The Sickness Is In My Head” and this comes in spot on the 16 minute mark. The track starts out with a fairly tightly locked & mixed collection of: churning, juddering and roasting static textures with this deeply buried chiming harmonic tone deep with in the ‘walls’ guts. Nearing the forth minute this churning ‘n’ swilling semi sputtering tipped noise tone has swam into sonic centre of the track. And also from time to time you can make out this chopping industrial like harmonic texture deep in the track roaring and seared sonic folds. By the 8th minute a roasting and swirling texture is the main focus of the track, but you still get hints of harmonic debris in the tracks background. Through out the rest of the track the 'wall' takes a few more textural shifts with subtle harmonic element buried in the back, yet it never fully departs its thick and uncompromising structure. All told this and the first track are two great examples of Last Rapes great layered walled noise craft.

So We move onto the three Pollutive Static tracks- first up is “Razor Room” which is the longer and more texturally detailed of this projects three tracks. It mixers together: throbbing judders, creepy yet intense billows, higher pitched jitters and lonesome sustained grates into a extremely intense yet atmospheric soup of seared sound. Hutchinson skilfully controls the sound  textural so they  nicely slip and serrate each other in a progressive, appealing yet always very thick walled manner.

Then we have the track “Perpetrator” which comes in just over the five minute twenty mark, and it brings together a stark and apocalyptic mixture of: billowing rumble, juddering and atmospheric junk like clattering and morose/ slicing buried phaser textures- with the whole thing being under pinned by stark harmonic trails.

The lastly we have the  track “Penetrator” which comes in at just under the ten minute mark. This track starts out with a high pitched single pitch slice before jumping into a seared ‘walled’ mass of noise which takes in: painful and constant dental drill tonalities, juddering and battering dwells, and overloaded machine like churnings. It’s a great end to a great split.

So all in all a very worthy split with both parties offering up some great examples of dense and thick HNW matter that has a lot of neat and rewarding textural layered shifts going on with in it. Thankfully this is a little less ltd than many of the HNW scenes releases with an edition of 150 copies.
