Askell Groc’hen. - Cri [Slow Death Records - 2011]“Cri” is an total unforgiving & horror themed slice of long form HNW. The single near on 80 minute track on offer here pummels & batters away at the listener like an unstoppable and complete overwellming blacked storm of sound. This CDR is the first release from this new project which is a collaboration between two dark & often horror themed French HNW sonic ventures. The project brings together skull, bone and crypt oppressed Bördel Noïr from western France. And wolf, haunted woodland and Heathen death obsessed Younx Grounioc'h from somewhere in central France. The title track smashers straight in like a Tsunami of pure sound, and does not let up until 78 minute later. The track weaves together: raging static downpours, juddering ‘n’ billowing roasts, hissing swirls, and galloping roars. The track feels like you stuck in side the mother of all storms, and things are coming at you from all angles. The piece remains very thick and punishing through-out, through I’m sure from time to time there’s a shift, turn or move with-in the layers of sound. But of course this 'movement' could all be a sonic illusion, as any HNW fan will tell that’s the amazing thing about a great ‘wall’- the feeling of movement, textural shift, or other weird sonic anomalies when the ‘wall’ is in reality completely unmoving. So all in all “Cri” offers the listener with one lengthy, overwhelming and completely enveloping slice of walled noise that has a very engulf storm and horror fed vibe running through it. Certainly this is a flooring & extreme opening short from this new collaborative project, and I look forward to hearing what the future brings for Askell Groc’hen. Roger Batty
