Bördel Noïr - Cul De Basse Fosse [Grotto X records - 2011]“Cul De Basse Fosse” (roughly translated "the bottom of the pit") presents the listener with seventy eight minutes of taut, brutal & intense walled noise from this crypt, bones and graveyard obsessed French HNW project. This is the first release from new French HNW/ Harsh noise label Grotto X records. And the cdr comes in suitable grim yet simple black semi glossy sleeve that features a single skull partially hidden in darkness on the front cover. The sleeve text is in fitting grim old English font which adds to the whole feeling of an ageless churning black force, which is of course is perfect for the ‘wall’ with-in. The self titled track is built around a tightly wound & dense mixture of several crusty ‘n’ bone splintering patterns of simple yet battering juddering static. Buried underneath this thick ‘n’ brutal crust I’m sure I can make out smaller & crisper snapping static textures- but of course this could just be a trick of the ‘wall’. All told it’s an effective & grim enough slice of punishing & unbroken walled noise, through I did find I started to lose interest around mid-way point so maybe it should have been shorted a bit more. “Cul De Basse Fosse” is another example of this French acts grim ‘n’ unrelenting take on walled noise. This is not one of this projects most moorish & entrancing tracks, but it still has it moments of punishing necro tinged brutality . So if you’ve enjoyed Bördel Noïr past work check this out, but if your new to the project start elsewhere. Roger Batty
