Hoggle - Approaching The Labyrinth [Muzikaal Kabaal - 2011]Hoggle is the new HNW project of Santa Fe US based Joe The Stache whose behind HNW/Harsh noise project Pig Shrapnel, and he also runs noise tape label Hair on My Food Tapes & Records. This CDR is the first release from this new project, and it offers up a moorish slice of unmoving HNW that comes in at just over the half an hour mark. The project is themed/ based around the 1986 family fantasy puppet/ live action movie The Labyrinth which was written & directed by puppeteer master & Muppet inventor Jim Henson. The film featured David Bowie & Jennifer Connelly in main roles- the story followed 15 year old Sarah (Connelly) who is left home alone by her parents to babysit her little brother Toby. But Toby keeps crying and Sarah, while telling him a story to make him sleep, inadvertently conjures up a fantasy world, then a Goblin King steals the child and brings him to his castle in the middle of a labyrinth. Sarah has to rescue him before midnight, or the baby will became a goblin. The project takes it’s name from a grumpy and obstinate dwarf who to start with refuses to help Sarah through the Labyrinth, but in time they become firm friends. The track starts out with a few seconds sample from the movie with David Bowie saying “Turn Back before it’s too late!”, then we kick into the ‘wall’ which is a great mixture of trapped billowing & skipping/ juddering static. Mr Stache ties these two elements together into a very urgent, focused & appealing ‘wall’. The track remains fairly fixed for it's just over half an hour runtime, & there’s a great, precise & focused feel to the ‘wall’ which gives the listener a nice uniformed yet entrancing slice of HNW to lock onto.
So to sum up this release- it's a very effective & focused slice of enjoyable wall making that’s backed up by a quirky & playful theme conecpt….I very much look forward to this projects next release. Roger Batty
