Graveland - Drunemeton [Forever Plagued Records - 2008]“Drunemeton” summons up a simply splendid & bizarrely grim mixture of off-kilter drum machine laced raw black metal, wavering yet dense ghoulish synth based atmospherics, and general creative yet lo-fi grimness. This is a reissue that brings together two 1992 promo releases from one man polish black metal project Graveland, and it’s safe to say if you like atmospheric yet off-kilter and darkly weird ambient blacked metal craft you’ll devour this grim sonic treat with gusto. The 15 tracks on offer here are a fairly evenly split between often ambient black metal craft & impressive/ muilt layered yet slightly wonky synth based atmospherics. The black metal tracks go from mid-paced to slower almost doom laced composition- these are propelled along by 90’s almost industrial sounding drum machine rhythms that are ebbed with dark yet lo-fi cinematic synth textures, and mysterious swirling growls. The ambient/ synth tracks sounds like Popol Vuh going over to the dark side with a loads of creepy sound effects on top- you get tolling bells, chanting monks, squawking birds, billowing storms, thunder, creepy monster wails, and crypt like scrapings that are added to the dense & sinister throbbing synth banks. At times “Drunemeton” sounds like it could be the soundtrack for some ultra obscure odd, & over the top gothic yet surreal late 70’s or early 80’s euro horror film, and at others it sounds like some industrial ribbed nocturnal horror metal band on downers. But there’s one thing that’s for certain this is some of the most atmospheric yet wonky, and weird black metal you’ll have ever have come across. So if you dig odd & off-kilter blacked metal craft this is a no brainer really, but also if you dig dense & muilt-layered grim synth atmospherics this also is a must have item. Roger Batty
