Astro - Devils Come True [Unlimited Drift - 2012]Astro aka Hiroshi Hasegawa aka Mortal Vision is one of the founding members of legendary psychedelic noise band C.C.C.C., and he's been relentlessly churning out noise for about twenty years. It's safe to say he's one of the most active and respected people in the Japanese scene. People will probably remember him mostly for his long psychedelic synth escapades, drone-y, hypnotic and even a bit "kraut". In the last few years though, Mr. Hasegawa cranked up the volume and strongly incremented the harsh noise side of his music, creating an interesting mix of old school space/industrial synth and more aggressive distorted contact microphone destruction which is especially effective in a live setting. This "Devils Come True" tape, released by American label Unlimited Drift in a mere thirty-five copies, is a step further in that direction. Astro's sound here is extremely lo-fi, murky and unusually dilated. Harsh noise and proto-industrial synth match perfectly in a mass of gargling, buzzing, pulsating sound that somehow reminded me a lot of old Mauthausen Orchestra tapes or some of the lengthier classics by Maurizio Bianchi. Both sides of the tape are dense, intensely filthy and completely un-entertaining, which is a "quality" often lost in modern noise.
"Devils Come True" really sounds like it could belong in the eighties, and this might put down those who are used to Astro's more clean and drone output. As I already mentioned all the classic elements of his music are here, but the extremely crude mix turns them into something else. While the material featured on this tape is not the absolute best Astro I ever stumbled upon, it's definitely interesting and strangely "European" and I'm sure it will titillate the appetite of filthy early noise fans.
It's like Astro meets Broken Flag! It's definitely worth a listen, good luck finding a copy though. Nicola Vinciguerra
