Burial Ground - Dedicated To George A. Romero [Occult Supremacy Productions - 2013]

Night Of The Living Dead, Dawn Of The Dead, and Day Of The Dead. With the three tracks been mixed into just shy of eighty minute mini ‘wall-fest’." />
"Dedicated To George A. Romero” is a recent CDR release that brings together three out of print releases by this popular La Crosse, Wisconsin  HNW project. Each of the releases pay walled noise tribute to Mr Romero Infamous & highly influence original zombie movie trilogy- Night Of The Living Dead, Dawn Of The Dead, and Day Of The Dead. With the three tracks been mixed into just shy of eighty minute mini ‘wall-fest’.

The original releases all appeared on Worthless Recordings in the year 2011, and they take in: “Night Of The Living Dead” which appeared as a c24 tape. “Dawn Of The Dead” which appeared as a single sided C32 tape, and “Day Of The Dead” which originally appeared as a single sided C122.

This reissue is in an edition of 50 copies, and the black ‘n’ grey spay painted CDR comes in slim CD case which features a single sheet black & white inlay. The inlay takes in on it’s front cover a still of zombies walking along from Night Of The Living Dead, and on it’s back there’s a picture of George A. Romero on the set of Day of The Dead surrounded by a mass of Zombies.

All the tracks here have been mixed together into a single track that comes in at the 79.47 mark.  And of course starting things off we have “Night Of The Living Dead” which runs between 0.00 & 23.53 minutes. This first part of the track starts off with a sample from the movie, and this takes in the classic early scene from the film were Johnny is mocking/ taunting his sister. By the 16 second mark the ‘wall’ has kicked-in, and it’s a truly raging mix of face-ripping, muffled low-end juddering ‘n’ billowing , and  rapid clattering ‘n’ jittering mid-range almost junk noise like attack. This first ‘wall’ is damn intense, shredding, rapid & over-whelming, though it stays with-in a fairly firm textural constraints/pattern.
At just before the 12 minute mark we get a movie sample break, and this takes in a news report about the recently dead coming back to life. With-in 20 seconds or so the walled noise has kicked back in, and this time it’s a mix of thick ‘n’ long loops of grey muffled churning noise, which are pitted with two or three smaller tones- there’s a: thin scraping & retracting tone , a billowing muffled static industrial drone weave , and possibly a few other textures. This ‘wall’ is one of my favourite here as there's a great rapid churning extreme-ness to it, and the darting secondary elements really pull you in deeper & deeper to the ‘wall’.

So at the 23.53 minute mark we move into the next part of the track “Dawn Of The Dead”, and this runs between 23.54 & 39.53. Once again this part opens with sample from it’s related movie, and this time it’s a layered sort of college- we have an academic man talking about the zombies, layers of distant moans and drags, and stripped/ sinister bound library music. By the around the  25.10 mark the ‘wall’ has kicked in, and it’s a mix of rapid ‘n’ muffled low-end juddering( which has a slight dragging almost aquatic feel at it’s tonal edge) & a thinner mass of fixed jittering/ clamouring tones. This part of the track is ok, but for me it did start to over stay it’s welcome fairly soon, as the texture seemed to lack that allusive key factor that makes one ‘wall’ great & another not- though I did like the way the elements stared to fade & blur together in the tracks last few minutes.

The third & last part of the track “Day Of The Dead”  starts at the 39.54 mark, and once again we have another sample from the movie. This time it’s a bit of helicopter like sounding synth sound tracking, and the sudden sound of a breaking door & a scream. The ‘wall’ kicks into to great brutal effect just after the forty one minute mark, and it’s a mix of rapid galloping & billowing noise mass, that has these cluttering ‘n’ semi churning tones feeding in it. This ‘wall’ very much keeps with the helicopter theme of the opening sample, but of course is way more over-loaded. The textures used here are of a fairly similar low-to-mid tonal ranged, but this ‘wall’ really seems to suck you deep into it’s brutal mass for it's full run-time. As this ‘wall’ progresses, I’m sure I can make out the textures slowing & dragging out a bit- with some other subtle sub-tones coming into play in the tracks last few minutes, but I’m not positive if these just are not just tricks of the ‘wall’, & in reality this is a fairly fixed bit of ‘wall-making’. The track ends with another movie sample, and this takes in dramatic darting synth music & synthetic drums, some one shouting & swearing at zombies as a man is getting attacked, and then the victim getting ripped apart & eaten.

For the most part this is a rewarding & lengthy ‘wall’ submersion, with each part of the track having elements of it’s selected films atmosphere about it. Sure a few of the ‘walls’ are a little less impressive, but the majority are worthy & compelling slices of wall noise intensity. As I mentioned early on this has an edition of 50 copies, so hopefully you'll be more likely to get hold of a copy of this compared with some of this projects much more ltd edition  releases.
