Invertia - Another Scheme of the Wicked [Ohm Resistance - 2014]Invertia hails from New England brandishing their mix of industrial black metal on their latest release, Another Scheme of the Wicked. Invertia is the creation of guitarist and vocalist, Dave Coppola with programmer and drummer Tim Winson. Lots of influences are heard here from Godflesh to Immortal, DHG, Aborym and Mysticum. Another Scheme of the Wicked is the follow up to their 2013 self titled debut album. We start off with five Invertia songs, then, the same songs remixed by othera. An interesting approach with positive results, comparing the originals to the remixes is pointless. All the originals here “The Sidewinding”, “Cross Eyed Christ”, “Void of Community”, “Hourglass Without Sand” and “They’re Everywhere” are complex mixtures of black metal with industrial flourishes. Every song has brilliant guitar riffs, spot on drums, well placed effects and a doomy mid section in “Hourglass Without Sand” that is stunningly heavy to the relentlessly fast, with a creepy into, “They’re Everywhere”. Vocals too mix up between high pitched black metal screams and deep guttural vocals (it kept reminding me of Immolations’ Ross Dolan on some songs) with a few spoken word samples spliced in for variety. Traveling on from the originals which are all well done we switch to the remixes which honestly said are just as diverse and transfixing. “The Sidewinding” remixed by Justin Broadrick is a noisy, dissonant, fusion of doom industrial darkwave. “Cross Eyed Christ” is given a mix by End.user morphing it into a gothic industrial mash up of Spahn Ranch and Machinochrist. “Void of Community”, (TranZi3nT remix) “Hourglass Without Sand” (Submerged remix), “They’re Everywhere” (remix by R3TRD) too are drum and bass, noisy, rhythmic creations of beautiful chaos. The idea of mixing originals with remixes is not new, but Invertia pull it off with an impressive flourish. It’s hard to pick what one likes better the original or the remix because well they both stand on their own. It all unites into a delicious blend of artistic chaos. Viktorya Kaufholz
