Minit - Now right here [Staubgold - 2004]Minit is an Australian duo living right now in Berlin. Now Right Here is their first full-length and is released on the constantly good Staubgold label. The duo uses “found sounds”, samples, that they edit digitally in order to create multi-layered, melodic drone pieces. Their music sound like a continuous flow, an endless melody. The four songs are almost post-rock in a way: very low-key at first, and then soaring melodies reaching emotional peaks. However, no pretence, no guitars, no politics, no shoegazing here. It’s actually quite funny how an intricate mixture of a huge variety of sounds, going everywhere and anywhere, sounding quite complex can end up as one, simple melody. At their best, Minit sounds like Ekkehard Ehlers. The overall mood is contemplative, if not sad. There is something delightful about listening to Now right here, lying on your bed late at night, trying to sleep. If you’re one of those people who enjoy being a little “mournful”, that is. I can’t say much else about this CD. If you like droney soundscapes, this is good stuff. Not the best in the genre, but still. If you need more obvious dynamics, go to bed without music.
