Ecco - The Curse Of Her Flesh [Self Release - 2015]Here’s another slice of searing ‘n’ sleazed walled noise from Julien Skrobek’s (The Killer Came From The Bronx ,Ghost, The Sandman Wears A Mask, Ruine, Butch Bag, Gasp, Ruine, etc) Ecco project. All releases from this project are based around 60’s & 70’s grind house movies, and this release is themed around 1968 roughie sexploitation movie The Curse Of Her Flesh. The Curse Of Her Flesh was the second in the infamous ‘Flesh’ trilogy- which brought together elements of nudity, sex , inventive murder & at times hilarious dialogue into a over-the-top exploitation ride. The films plot told of unhinged weapons expert Richard Jennings- who is stalking & killing strippers after his wife was unfaithful. This release comes in a form of digital release, which either be streamed or downloaded from Julien’s bandcamp. It takes in two tracks that each come in around the twenty minute mark, and first of these is “Power-Packed Sequel” – it opens with a minute or so of great sleazy & hilarious dialogue from the film, then the ‘wall’ comes in. It’s built around an almost aquatic sounding deep rumble, which is pitted with a mesh of smaller snapping ‘n’ cracking tones. The rumble stays firm & murky through-out, while the snapping ‘n’ crackling tones seem to have a slight amount of movement to them. The rumble gives the whole thing quite a grim vibe, while the crackling tones mix together a feel of eerier-ness & feasting urgency. Track two comes in the form of “Daring & Lusty”, and once again it starts with a brief sample of dialogue from the film, then in less than a minute the ‘wall’ comes in. It’s a mix of tautly wrapped & purring low end, which is weaved with a constant & violent judder ‘n’ rattling. Both elements are fixed here, and Julien really mangers to suck you in with the tracks seem endless taut, spiral (yet sleazed) & hypnotic tension. I’ll must say Ecco has fast become one of my favourites of Julien’s many projects- as so far each release he’s put out has managed to capture the sleaze, violent, and often tongue-in-cheek vibe of the best grind house movies. So if you enjoyed well conceived & entrancing walled noise with a sleazy movie theme- then you must go and check out this release. It can be purchased from Julien’s band camp here. Roger Batty
