Auditor & Venowl - Acid Revealing Open Wounds [Altar Of Waste - 2013]Here we have a searing & horror-fed slurred doom meets noise collaboration between these two Chicago projects. On offer here is a double disc cdr set, with each disc presenting the listener with two thirty minute slices of intense/ nightmarish jam-outs that blend together blunt, sluggish & seared doom riffing, with pained shouts/ bays, and malevolent/ nasty electro noise matter. The first disc takes in two slices of studio based collaborations, while the second disc takes two live collaborations. The studio disc is slight more doom focused in it’s feel( through there is still noise layers present), while the live disc is expectedly more noisy & nasty- but both discs offer up some seriously unforgiving & nihilistic sonics. The albums write-up compares it to “Khanate on LSD locked in a room with Merzbow”, and that’s a fair enough indicator of what to expect here. Each track features a fairly simple riff, that is both bluntly hope-less & angular- these are stretched, stopped & started over each tracks truly torturous unfold. And along the way we get coarse clumps of bayed & pained yells/ screams, bone rattling drum kit smashes, and skin slicing noise bound flotsam & jetsam. All four of the tracks riffs are fairly similar in their sound, but this release is not really about melody or variation- the whole point it to create the ultimate slurred, noised-up & nastily nihilistic doom worship. And that’s exactly what this does. This release appeared on Minneapolis based Altar Of Waste- this lable normally focuses in on more of a drone, HNW, blacked noise output- so it’s great to see them releasing something a little different. And on the whole I’d say this is a worthy slice of noised up & torturous doom. Roger Batty
