Miguel A. Garcia & Alfredo Costa Monteir - Ate Gena [Geräuschmanufaktur - 2016]Geräuschmanufaktur presents Ate Gena, a full-length CD by Miguel A. Garcia & Alfredo Costa Monteiro. Released earlier this year, Ate Gena is the first offering by this collaboration of multi-media artists. I wasn’t at all familiar with either artist, but Geräuschmanufaktur has released a pretty solid slate of releases over the years, so color me intrigued. Ate Gena features 2 longform tracks running at 23+ minutes a piece. Both Garcia and Costa bring different elements to the table to create ample tension and contrast, with heavy emphasis on atmospherics. Electronics and electro acoustic manipulations collide to deliver layered drone, sprightly synth tones, waves of static wash, speaker rattling lows, electronic pulsing, and junk metal interludes. Both tracks ebb n’ flow between steadier focused sounds and harsh noise tidings. I dare say that it’s thinking music for the noise set. Just set in and get lost in a tapestry of sounds. As with all Geräuschmanufaktur I’ve come across, this one also has nice packaging. It comes in gatefold cover with old Japanese folk art by Seiken Toriyama. Ate Gena is another solid addition to the Geräuschmanufaktur catalog. While I can’t comment on the solo work of either Garcia or Monteiro, I can say combined they make one hell of a collaboration. True noise collage, just how I like it. Hal Harmon
