Black Lesbian Fishermen - Ectpoic Apiary [Reverb Worship - 2016]This rather wonderfully named and seemingly quite mysterious project brew-up a heady & subtly genre mixing sound that moves from: drifting ‘n’ psychedelic, onto smoky/ filmatic, through-to-moody-yet taut, onto quirky & loosely Avant-grade. Ectopic Apiary is the project’s debut release, & it comes in the form of a CDR released on UK's Reverb Worship in an edition of 50 copies The album features six tracks, and has a total running time of around a hour. Four of the six tracks here clock in around & well over the ten minute mark, so as you’d expect the vibe here is often quite drifting & jam-like, yet the tracks never really loses focus- as they blend together formal jam rock instrumentation, subtle electronic elements, and more folk bound instrumentation The tracks move from blends of lulling ‘n’ flute ebbed psychedelic rock jam-outs. Onto slurred & vibe heavy lo-if jazziness, ebbed with male spoken word elements. Through to blends of folk/ rock strums alive with female folk singing, & weaved with skeletal beats ‘n’ subtle simmers of spacey synth drift. Onto simmering & building space-bound ambience, mixed with creative blends of field recordings, subbed noise making, electronics and drifts of moody male spoken word. Ectopic Apiary is very much of a slowly shifting & often surprising ride of an album. And as debut’s go it’s pretty impressive in both it’s effortless blending & mixing of genres, and it’s generally unfold. Roger Batty
