Controlled Bleeding - Distress Signals II [Artoffact - 2016]Centring around the mainstay Of Paul Lemos, Controlled Bleeding have tweaked, fiddled, and generally interfered with a large swathe of musical genres. However, anyone with even a passing acquaintance with their music will know they have always delivered music that both challenges and rewards in equal measure, even if you feel uneasy and used at the end of listening to it. “Distress Signals” was originally released in 1984, however this is part two of a pair of releases from Canadian label, Artofact Records, and has never seen the light of day. Until now. “Distress Signals II” is how Lemos would have liked the original cassette, released on Gary Mundys’ Broken Flag, to have sounded. Due to a catalogue of errors a different version was actually issued. All 11 titles are “Untitled”, and as such any interpretation by the listener is purely their own. Therefore, there is no hint at a meaning or a reference point to guide you through. There’s a sweaty, sleazy undercurrent running through this - it might be dirty, but it’s your own familiar kind of dirty, so revel in it.
This is pure industrial music at its’ finest. Mixing metal bashing with power electronics, found sound, rhythms and occasional vocals from Chris Moriaty you are pummelled from start to finish and glad about that fact. This is both cathartic and sordid. Think “150 Murderous Passions” cut up into bite size chunks of filth.
Taken as a whole this is a masterpiece, and so deserving of the reissue / release status. Each of the tracks is a triumph. Even back in 1984, Controlled Bleeding were among the upper echelons of a now far too over crowded scene, this album keeps them in that position. Perfect. Adam Skyes
