Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf( - Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf( DVD & Blu R [Arrow Video - 2016]It’s fair to say that Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf has to one of the great OTT, campy, & fun horror movies of the 1980’s. Here we have a reissue of the film from late 2016 on Arrow Video. As with normal from Arrow you get a nice classy presentation with both the DVD & Blu Ray versions of the film. You get their normal double-sided cover design; featuring both newly created artwork & original film poster work. And with the first reissue you a glossy inlay booklet, featuring new writing on the film by horror film commenter Michael Blyth, & stills, etc.
The film appeared in 1985, and was directed byrespected, often quirky, and genre jumping director Philippe Mora(Mad Dog Morgan, Death of a Soldier, & Communion). The plot is only very, very vaguely linked to the original Howling. It follows Ben White- the brother of the newsreader lead from the first film. He is attending his sister funeral, where he meets the mysterious Stefan Crosscoe( Christopher Lee)- who convinces him that his sister was a werewolf (hence the title!). And then gets him to head to Transylvania with him to battle & destroy Stirba- the immortal queen of all werewolves(played by cult B-movie queen Sybil Danning)
What follows over the next hour & a half is a total over the top, wacky, and playful blend of gory killings, werewolf’s dressed in monkey costumes, new-wave/ punk soundtrack/ fashion. Killer dwarfs, werewolf orgies, weird & sleazy side characters, leather shoulder pads, sun glasses inside, 80’s action, crony / wacky werewolf mythos ( delivered wonderful straight face by Mr Lee), and a general tongue-in- cheek / campy horror vibe.
I first saw the film around 1986/87 on video as a teen, and as you can imagine it’s blend of gore, action, and bare female flesh had quite a impact on me. I’d not seen it since, and I must say re-watching it all these years later it’s still a great fun ride of a movie- which pulls you along at a rapid pace though it's very 80’s thrills & chills. It really is a near perfect example of 80’s B movie/ exploitation, that just wants to have fun with you.
Extras wise on the two discs you get two commentaries- one from director Philippe Mora, and one with composer Steve Parsons and editor Charles Bornstein. The one with Mora, is both amusing & highly informative- as he discussing filming in Prague( which is used as Transylvania) when it’s was still under Russian control in the 1980’s, tales of the lead actors, etc. You also get a good selection of featurettes ( mostly transferred over from the Scream factory release of the film)- taking in stand alone interviews with Danning, Mora & Reb Brown( who played the films male lead Ben White). As well as interviews the with effects artists, an alternate ending, and behind the scene footage.
So in conclusion if you an penchant for OTT/ so-bad-there-great/ cheesy 1980’s horror movies, then Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf really is something you must check out. Another very worthy release from Arrow video. Roger Batty
