PC Worship - Buried Wish [Norther Spy - 2017]Buried Wish is an off-kilter journey through alternative rock, tape manipulation and improv based psychedelic instrumentals. This is like Pavement with Sebadoh meeting Neubauten, with a bit of Beefhearts Magic Band in the background. This album simply shouldn’t work, it should be utterly awful…. but somehow it isn’t. Spanning 12 tracks this album begins with “Lifeless Rain On An Empty Moon”, 1 minute of bassoon and huge hints at the improv end of Jazz mixed with Musique Concrete and this is the point where I think this album isn’t going to work at all. However, once that tracks over, we hit a finely crafted album of music that just keeps getting better.
“Blank Touch” is a lo-fi, under produced track that has some wonderful hooks in it, but non of those hooks are there to even attempt at bringing the listener into the song. With “River Running Sideways” the disonnance of the guitar at the outset is mildly annoying, but forgiven, as the track is a slacker masterpiece!
“Back Of My $$$” is slow, reverent almost and just dirtily distorted with beautifully chorused vocals it’s stupidly good. By the time we hit “Help” you can sense this album is just whimsical and silly, but oh so very good. The improv seems to have gone (thank god!) and we are left with well crafted songs at the far end of alt. Rock
Ok, some of this album doesn’t work, some of it’s just irritating. “Perch On The Wall”, for instance, if this were any slower my review would be typed faster than the song! “Tranq”, an instrumental track has the right amount of distorted bass to go with the dissonant guitar (which I know realise is a recurring motif) to make that sound less irritating. “Buried Wish” another instrumental is a long controlled piece of feedback with drums and I have to say possibly the best track on the album! At 8 minutes it’s the centrepiece. The squalling noise and feedback that close the track are perfect.
This is an excellent example of alt. rock. It has it’s imperfections, sometimes the tempo could just rise a bit more and that dissonant guitar should be cut! Quite frankly taken as a whole this isn’t the prettiest album (although the last track “Tranquill Pain” is outstanding!) but it has pretension of stunning beauty. Its the girl next door or the nerd. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it will make you look twice. Adam Skyes
