Black Needle Noise - Swimming Through Dreams [Self Release - 2017]Black Needle Noise is producer John Fryer. This gentleman needs no introduction to any fan of 4AD, Mute or a host of other indie labels. His work is almost the stuff of legends. Its certainly the stuff of most indie or alternative kids dreams. With Black Needle Noise he has teamed up with Mimi Page for his latest single “Swimming Through Dreams” a gorgeous oceanic masterpiece filled with cascading vocals, almost glacial guitars and the heightened emotions one normally only finds pouring out of a Cocteau Twins album.
However, BNN are not just treading the path of Johns previous production works, the song is sublime in it’s simplicity. Mimi has a voice on a par with the late great Ofra Haza and this mixes perfectly with the lush keyboards and guitars.
My only criticism is not of this piece, but the fact the release is only one track long. Putting several tracks together as single seems more old fashioned these days, but I think it makes more sense than releasing a single track on it’s own. Admittedly BNN are doing this leading up to an album coming out and it’s nice to be teased, but like all teases you are left wanting more. Still I can’t fault the track! Adam Skyes
