Dødsmaskin - Fullstendig Brent [Malignant Records - 2017]Debut album by this Norwegian dark ambient outfit, Fullstendig Brent, is a sonic masterpiece consisting of five very heavy, very detailed and atmospheric tracks. From quiet beginnings to bombastic climaxes Fullstendig Brent is nothing short of perfect. Opening with “Båldom”, a static-drenched track of simplicity that give one the feeling of loss and times passed. You are listening to the memories of ghosts long gone, and by the time we reach the eight minute mark those memories are nightmares, before you are left alone again.
The beauty of this album is the band themselves have veered away from the usual dark ambient stance & cliches, instead they allow your own imagery to pervade the music as you journey through the album.
“Heksetimen” is a foggy swirling piece that engulfs and envelops you from the outset, each wisp of fog drawing you deeper toward the sinister and unnerving centre of the pice as voices and noises rise and fall around you. The static from an old record player, once again, hurries into the piece to add a familiar aspect to the track.
There is a sense this album is taking up the baton where Wilts “1940” masterpiece left off, however Dødsmaskin are quickly showing they aren’t going to stand in the shadows (excuse the pun) of any other dark ambient act. This is finely crafted music that holds you in it’s grasp from start to finish.
Each track is unique, it isn’t a carbon copy of the one prior, this is an album of distinction and subtlety: for example track three , “Christoffer Orning”, opens with chanting and wailing before the noise and terror both crash down upon you as the beast who is being invoked at the beginning rises within the song and lays waste to those in his midst. You are left reeling before a second wave of chaos erupts around you. At just over ten minutes this is a brutal assault of a track.
I have reviewed numerous albums now for m[m] and I, therefore, have quite a catalogue of music available. However, very few albums I’ve reviewed make it onto my MP3 player. This album is one of the albums that went straight into my own collection. It’s wonderful. If you enjoy any aspect of industrial, death industrial, noise or dark ambient you will want this album and you will play it to death. I really Cant wait for the follow up! Adam Skyes
