Dying Fetus - Wrong One To Fuck With [Relapse - 2017]

Legendary technical death metallers, Dying Fetus, are back with their eighth full length, and sixth with Relapse Records. With over 25 years under their belt, Dying Fetus return better than ever with Wrong One To Fuck With. With 10 tracks of death metal fury, their newest album reminds us why we love the power of death metal, and will definitely strip away any summertime blues.

Starting off like an active, mechanical spider enveloping its prey or like a malfunctioning Atari 2600, "Fixated on Devastation" soon drops the arachnid act and goes on to full, pulverizing, death grooves. Mid paced and plodding, Dying Fetus uses this chug to promote a healthy, mosh worthy groove. As a side effect, the blistering, spidery guitar solos are highlighted by their stark difference to the song from which they erupt. This formula pervades Wrong One To Fuck With, and it works very well. Getting the listener invested via slick, heavy riffs, and headbanging grooves, Dying Fetus has them at their will to take them in any direction so desired. Whether taking them on a hyper speed tour of death metal riffery like "Weaken the Structure" or breaking down to an almost sludge-worthy crawl like the second half of "Reveling In the Abyss," Dying Fetus has years of finely tuned chops at their disposal. Changing tempos and keeping each song fresh, Wrong One To Fuck With flies by quickly, despite the near fifty minute run time.

Having been on the scene for almost its entire lifespan, Dying Fetus has seen bands come, bands go, trends sweep in, and trends wash back out to sea. Sticking true to their technical death metal roots, their latest release, Wrong One To Fuck With, has tight riffs, machine gun drums, and precisely barked vocals. Not necessarily raising the bar, but definitely reinforcing it, Dying Fetus' latest is a solid, modern exercise in death metal.
